Ser o Estar  by mikebarham   26. Oct 2012   Spanish

El evento es organizado por la federación de deportes.

The above sentence came up in my practice sesion.

I realise that ser is used for events location but I think that in this case it should be ..'esta organisado'...as this is the usual auxiliary verb with a past participle formula.

Any clarification would be welcome.

Mike

Sentences by Topic Lists (sounds)  by johnfpecora   8. May 2012   Italian

I found that a lot of the sentences in the practice area do not have sound. You need to go to details or click each word. The problem is, it takes to you the sound (speaking) of the infinitive instead of the word. As we all know, the scounds can change dramatically from the infintive to on of the forms of the infintive.

Just a heads up. I do love this site, and hope opinions from common users like me help.

Direct Translation  by johnfpecora   8. May 2012   Italian

I don't know it my just be me, but I would like the exact translation instead of what it might be translated to(interpretation) if I were not Italian. Let me give an example.

Dalle olive si ottiene il migliore olio.

The best oil is extracted from olives.

Although both sentences mean the same thing it is not a direct translation, thus this way teach us that if we want to say something we need to rethink the whole grammar thingy. The translation should be;

From Olives you obtain the best oil.

A lot of sites do it this way, but I did find one that gives a direct translation. This helps me think like an italian and use the correct words. There are even words that are interpretations instead of direct translations.

The use of の after a verb  by timberwillow   26. Apr 2012   Japanese

Here is the example:

りんご は 何個 買った の ?
ringo ha nanko katta no?

However, I do not understand what this implies. I understand that 買った is a casual past tense verb so りんご は 何個 買った makes sense. How does の affect the meaning or emphasis of the sentence?

I just wanted to say "thanks" to the people who've taken the time to set up and maintain this website. I've been taking Chinese classes in Taiwan for about 3 months, and I've used your site to help organize and drill my new vocabulary. Much easier than making hundreds of flashcards by hand (been there, done that! NOT fun.)

Though I have learned something, yet I hope one day the exercises would make me more fluent.
I wish if I can write in German as well. It always had been my earnest passion to have a good command on this super language.

Blocked words  by edgarito   12. Feb 2012   German

Hello

First, I love this site, is very user frendly and addictive, also very accesible price, my best $6.99 invested.

There are a way to make a review of the "learned" words, I mean, when I memorize one word I block it, so these word don't appear again in the list. But I would like to review the words I blocked to loop in again in the list the words I have forgot the meaning.

Thanks.

Great Site  by NPKring   9. Nov 2006   German

I am a self study student of the German language, and this site is a great help! One of the worst problems that I have is remembering noun gender (die, der, das). A great improvement for me would be to include the gender word after the noun in parentheses in the active words list. Including the gender word in the sound files is probably too much trouble, however, if you could find time, that would be a big help as well. Thank you for your efforts on the current website layout, it is easy to use and fast to navigate.

Have you though about adding short stories or poems?  by duchessmaeve92   23. Jan 2010   German

Hello,
I've been using German-flashcards for a while now, and it's been really great. I love it. :) But I think the value would greatly increase if you added short stories or poems. It couldn't be that hard right? After all stories are made up of sentences right? ;)
I have "The Three Little Pigs" in German with English text and it's been so helpful! I've found it much easier to remember how to say things when there's a story attached. My sister has got it almost completely memorized and I'm working on it too. I've searched around and found a few other stories read out loud in German, but they never include the text and my German isn't good enough to learn it without text. So I thought maybe Flashcards could do it? :)
Anyways Ill still love this site either way. Cheers ~duchessmaeve

Add Sentences - Contribute w/ Entries  by milady495a   23. Mar 2010   German

I was searching through the forums and found another topic on contributing with sentences, which was positively answered, but the feature was not implemented. I found this learning method with flashcards quite useful, but certain words -specially those that are not that common- are often not followed by a sentence that might help with its particular collocation (what I mean by this is that there are some verbs or nouns that require a preposition or are used in a way you wouldn't instantly understand unless seen in a context).

It's a hard work to add a bunch of phrases for every word on the list, but if users were able to easily send a sentence for a word that has none, your database would quickly increase and it'll become more useful, once we can link a word to a particular context.

You have my gratitude for this amazing learning tool, keep up the good work.

Why the difference?  by db_cisco   25. Jun 2010   German

Guter Tag, jeder!

Studying and seen that these two sentences are used in the courseware, but wonder why the difference:
1) Ich arbeite an der Schule.
2) Ich arbeite im Krankenhaus.

Wouldn't both occupations, which are inside a facility, be in (im) the facility?

Thanks and please advise.

Verbs w/ verbs, nouns w/ nouns, etc  by Ubykh   27. May 2010   German

I love the multiple choice option as it allows me to get comfortable with the vocabulary before I go to a "colder" method of writing it in, but is it possible to have an option where if its asking for a verb, then verbs will be the only choices listed? Right now it is too easy because I just narrow down from the parts of speech I know it cant be.

Is this sentence correct?  by Ubykh   6. Nov 2010   German

This is one of the example sentences here on this site and I want to make sure Im learning correctly.

"Er liebte seinen Neffen, als ob es sein eigenes Kind wäre."

Im barely intermediate at this point so if Im wrong, thats fine, but if Im right in thinking that it should be "..,als ob sein es..." then I want to make sure Im learning correctly.
