Great Site  by NPKring   9. Nov 2006

I am a self study student of the German language, and this site is a great help! One of the worst problems that I have is remembering noun gender (die, der, das). A great improvement for me would be to include the gender word after the noun in parentheses in the active words list. Including the gender word in the sound files is probably too much trouble, however, if you could find time, that would be a big help as well. Thank you for your efforts on the current website layout, it is easy to use and fast to navigate.

I also am concerned about this. (Love the site, by the way - highly addictive.) I'm an American living in France and I still don't know some of my French genders. I'd like to start the right way with German. My suggestion for format, if possible: multiple choice quizes with "Versorgung (provision, supply)" at top and A, B and C choices for der, die, das. So the answer choices are the same every time.

I agree with the chat chain and see that the site admin is working on making this happen. I too am trying to teach myself German and hope to teach my newborn son as he grows up.

Anyway, the other day I was offered a rule which I can't find an exception to so I figured I'd pass it on. If the German word ends in an "e" then the article is die (die Schule, die Partie, etc). It also bears mentioning that ending in e means die, but die doesn't mean ending in e (die Frau). I know that doesn't solve the whole problem, but it will help with some of the words.

Not all nouns that end in e are feminine: der Käse, der Name, der Löwe

I totally agree with the preveous comments. Gender is the most difficult thing. There could be some test to train just articles...

Great site btw! Vielen Dank!

i don't think that trying to memorieze the gender of every word is going to work, you wil forget them sooner or later. I believe byy practice when u read more and keep on reading texts you'l get to know the gender of each word automatically as if you memorized it. but directly memorizing!! i don't think so. it's just an opinion.

I agree that adding the definite article in the pronunciation of each word would be very helpful. Hearing the article associated with each noun is extremely important to learning the gender without having to "think" about the gender. Love this site!

I think it is better w/o the genders spoken.

Seems this has been already done.

The first rule I was taught at school many years ago is you must always learn the article with the noun. So I was pretty dismayed when I found that the audio ommitted it.

However I find that Germans always omit it when I ask whats the German for xxx. I then have to ask "der, die oder das xxx". Having said that I still rarely remember the genders.

I am just beinning to learn German. One thing that has helped the der die das thing is to make 3 columns on a piece of paper headed der die das. Then write or type words you are currently using under the correct column. For me, having seen the word under a specific column has helped me memorize them.

There are a few rules, I think.
Nouns referring to young people/animals are usually 'das' and diminutives ending in -chen and -lein.
Days of the week, months, seasons are 'der'
Trees, fruits and flowers are usually 'die'
Nouns ending in -el, -en, -er, ig, -ich, -ling are usually 'der'

The fundamentals of German grammar rules are based on gender. You must learn the gender. Anyone who says otherwise is being ridiculous. Any language school or course will teach you the word with the gender articles attached.
