Du and Dir are conjugations. They represent Masculine and Feminine. Just like Die and Der. |

No, not true - nothing to do with gender (masculine/feminine). They represent different cases... the "you" in German depends on what what functions/context it has in the sentence... |

du is nominative, dir is dative, dich is accusative.
We have the same thing in English apart from we use 'your' or 'you' for nominative, accusative and dative.
So: Can you?---Kannst du? Nominative
I love you -- Ich liebe dich.....Accusative
I give you the butter---Ich gebe dir den Butter. Dative
(Although i may stand corrected thats the basic idea)
Of course then you have genetiv case, but thats another story. |
