A little confused  by xantera   2. Nov 2010

Hi im very newbie to learning dutch. Upon practicing some of the exercises i noticed one thing that confused me. Hopefully someone can help clear things up :-) I noticed that Gefeliciteerd means ongratulate and happy birthday and Feliciteren also meand to congratulate. Is this just a case of different word same meaning? or is there a correct way to use these words?

hey, i was confused with that also, but luckily i have a dutch friend who i asked what 'gefeliciteerd' meant and he told me it meant 'congratulations'... and i think you just use it as if you were congratulating someone:) hope this helps.

gefeliciteerd means; congratulated
feliciteren means; to congratulate

Hi,

Gefeliciteerd = Congratulations! You use to congratulate someone with their birthday or when something nice has happened: they got married or had a baby or passed their exam or driving test...
Happy birthday = Gelukkige verjaardag. You can use it only when it is someones birthday.
Then there's 'feliciteren', which is the infinitive of 'Gefeliciteerd'. Feliciteren = to congratulate. It is a verb and should be used as one.
