Suggestion regarding prepositions by mitzoc 9. Nov 2010 German I have a small sugestion: After a verb, the required prepositions should be displayed as well. Knowing the verb alone is simply useless if you don't know the preposition it requires. If you don't know the preposition, you will never be able to use that verb in a phrase. For example: I might know the expression "in Ungnade fallen", but it's impossible to use it in a sentence if I don't know the preposition (which isn't easy to guess). It would be very useful if the expression is displayed like this: "in Ungnade fallen + bei" Of course, for the transitive verbs that require no preposition there is nothing to add. 1 Reply 1 new |

Self-Studying German by jt.onam 1. Jan 2010 German I am a high school student, trying to self-study German. I'm not doing for college applications or anything, but for my own interest and myself. No school or learning center around my area teaches German, so it is really hard to find free German books or any teacher to maybe guide me in the right direction. Is there any advice any of you experienced learners wants to give me? 11 Replies 11 new |

What stories or authors are best to read at an intermediate novel ? by Bergamasque 27. Jul 2011 German What novellas or short stories, or just authors, would you recommend to help learn new vocabulary at an intermediate level ? I have been able to read some Wedekind plays and some Arthur Schnitzler novellas in the past, and I started reading Stefan Zweig, but I still have to look up a lot of words and it makes reading very slow. So I'd be looking for something from which I can still learn new words by looking them up but where I can read the story more easily without needing to look up every 5th word (more like 3-5 a page would be ideal). Also, would anyone know of "German Word Of The Day" widgets to use on the desktop (as opposed to the kind to be embedded in webpages) ? Thank you very much. |

Similar site for other languages? by SkyHiRider 24. Aug 2011 German I registered a few months back and I love this site, especially that it sends me a mail of a few sentences and words each day. Is there a similar site for any other language out there that you can recommend? 2 Replies 2 new |
hurting lower back by Ski 3. Jan 2012 German Just wondered if you dealt with the common expression "to throw one's back out" which is a common occurrence, and you don't have to be old. How do you say it in German? I know how to say it in Japanese but can't think of ways to say it in German. It happens when you try to lift something heavy or bend over while x-ray may or may not show any structural damage. Chronic condition is referred to as lumbago, I think. |

Words in queue by hdongen 11. Jan 2012 Spanish Hi everybody, Does anybody know how the number of words in queue is determined? I assumed as long as there are words I have to repeat, no new words will be added. But today I have over 100 words in queue (I skipped practicing yesterday) and the first word the program starts with, is a first time word. I don't understand the logic of that. I'd rather start repeating words first and only add first timers if my queue isn't crowded like today. With kind regards, Henny 11 Replies 11 new |

Chinese or Taiwanese? by Gesges 9. Sept 2011 Chinese Hi you all!! I am new here (I've just registered). I've already scrolled through some of the posts and haven't found a similar question, so I hope I am not double-posting anything. I was wondering whether this site was for learning Chinese only, or if the pronounciation is Taiwanese (since most of the creators of this site seem to be Taiwanese). I have heard that there is a considerable difference between the two up to the point that Chinese is not understood well (if at all) in Taiwan (and vice versa). I will be visiting Taiwan in a few weeks and want to be able to say at least some basic sentences (such as "Hello", "Where is...?", "Thank you" etc). From what I gather here, some of you seem to be in Taiwan and study Chinese to be able to communicate with the Taiwanese. So now I am confused about which language to learn. Or is it that, in Taiwan, Chinese is sort of the "official language" that is understood everywhere, whereas Taiwanese is the language that is actually used? [Show complete post] 4 Replies 4 new |

Hej! Greetings from Portuguese student of Swedish! by Musiker 17. Dec 2011 Swedish Hej! I'm from Portugal, and I'm learning Swedish, in a free course in the University of my hometown, Porto. I have been in Sweden, in 2006, and I loved. The way of life, the people, the nature, the culture, the history, (which I already knew from reading, etc.). I'm really determined to master the Swedish Language, and this amazing website will be a great and excellent help on that! Thank you! Tack! 1 Reply 1 new |

Adding Furigana and Romaji to Sentences by Asiataal 15. Sept 2011 Japanese As a beginner I am concentrating on Sentences. I have not yet reached the stage that I can read the Kanji. Would it be possible to add Furagana to the Kanji? And perhaps also Romaji for the whole sentence (such as under details) as that would facilitate reading a lot. As in many (most) instances the word order in the English translation does not follow the Japanese word order, this would help, in my humble opinion, in understanding the word order in a phrase. To have Romaji under the Kana will give a quick overall view. Now I have to go from character to character. 7 Replies 7 new |

Starting at 7 day trial, and the inexpensiveness of the service- to the chosen levels, supporting vocabulary and tests...well, its a dream come true! Suddenly, all of the things I have been looking for all these three years have dropped into my lap in a nicely wrapped package. Pinyin for Sentences by Level by Asiataal 2. Oct 2011 Chinese When I study words by level the Hanzi + Pinyin + English is shown. This usefull, as it shows both the pronounciation and the meaning for the Hanzi. When I go for studying sentences by level, the same trias is not there. It gives only Hanzi + English. That is a pity, as I have now to go backwards and forwards to details. Would it be possible to add the Pinyin to Sentences by Level, in a same manner as for Words by Level? 6 Replies 6 new |

[Add Note] Feature by CalmDownMonkey 21. Nov 2011 Thai Hi, I'm highly impressed with what I've seen of the site so far, and I'm certain it'll help extend my vocabulary. I would like to ask what the "Add Note" feature does. I've tried to explore it, and I see the following problems: 1. After adding a note, you are taking to a confirmation page with no way to return to the word you were on besides using the browser's "back" button twice. 2. The only way to see the note again is to click "Add Note". Is there a way to see the note under the word on the flashcard? I like to try to remember words by thinking up mnemonics, so seeing my note on the flashcard and/or on the Active Words list page would be hugely helpful. Thanks... 1 Reply 1 new |
