Difference between 'an' and 'bei' by gsconyer 2. Feb 2010
Can anyone tell me the difference between "an" and "bei"? Both words are defined as "at, by, in" here and when I look in some of my other resources there seems to be little difference there, too.

Well, they are both preposition. The meaning of the words depends very much on their use. But basically "bei" means to be at the place near the object. (Es ist bei dem Auto./It is at the car.)
And "an" means more like to be connect to the object. (Es ist an dem Auto/It is on the car.(it's glued on it or something)) |

"An", as said by h.....n is when something is on a vertical boundary eg wall, car door and bei is at a location. "Auf" is also like "An" meaning at,on etc but when on a horizonotal boundary..eg auf dem Strasse...on the street. Both "An" and "Auf" are dative propositions.
