Sorry for what seems should be a easy question to answer, but why do these sentences require 'zu'? if you have any suggested documentation links or books, please share.
Die Katze sieht dem Fisch zu.
Das Kind hört zu.
Die Eltern hören zu.

"Zu" is part of the verb (zusehen, zuhoeren). | db_cisco 18. Nov 2010
