Dialogs  by michaell   28. Dec 2008   German

Can you add more dialog texts?
It is good that you add so many texts to News category, but they are too complicated for newbies in German, like I am :))

Slower sentences?  by hosai   4. Jan 2009   German

Hi, I was just wondering if it would be possible to have an option of playing the sentences more slowly as although I can hear the words on their own well, sentences are much harder.
Also it might be good to have more verbs like 'I eat', 'he will eat', 'they ate'.

German Grammar  by dyzner   29. Dec 2008   German

I really appreciate the site and it works extremely well.

I would like to see Grammar added and explained in a similar format to the existing site as it is an integral part of learning the language.

Issues  by dyzner   31. Dec 2008   German

Some other issues I came across that I thought may improve the sites flexibility.

1) It would be nice to have the ability to make an individual word repeat several times on a separate loop to that of the word list so as to practice the individual pronunciation of a given word. At present you only have the choice to manually click the word over and over. When you are satisfied with your practice, move on.

2) When making a manual list it would be better to arrange the words in the order I want to learn them in, possibly a drag and drop system would work or a simple up and down selection on the right side navigation bar.

3) When the managed list is printed it would be nice to maintain the original order they were placed in by the above method, linking in with the list of words in the loop. By practicing with both the online and printed lists (in the same order) the process would appear to flow for the user therefore creating an easier learning method.

response to individualz  by SOUPSOUP14   2. Dec 2008   German

die, das, der, etc. all mean "the" but used in different terms. e.g. "die" Frau (woman)"der" Junge (boy) "der" is more for the male gender, while die is more along the lines of female. Although I think that Mädchen (girl) uses "das"

Chinese Newbie Advice Please!!  by LaMasChevere   14. Nov 2008   Chinese

Well, I'm 100% dedicated to learning Chinese right now. Everyone keeps saying how hard it is to learn but I'm still very determined. The only thing is that Im not taking a class and I only have one Chinese friend who only speaks Chinese. Since he doesnt speak much English it can be hard to communicate with him. Anyway, any advice on where a good place to start is? Im new at learning Chinese and what I know is pretty basic (hello, how are you, whats your name, etc) Any advice from more seasoned Chinese learners? Your advice would be very much appreciated! Thank You!

New here!  by hellbunnie   20. Aug 2008   Chinese

Hey, just signed up today as intermediate-ish studier. My foundation's been in Taiwan speaking, but with Mainland writing, so this site helps a lot.

Has anyone on here taken the HSK? I'm wondering how useful this site is as a study aid for that (I hear there is a specific list of characters the HSK tests on).

Thanks!

Going to hong kong  by sarahw   11. Feb 2008   Chinese

I'm going to study in a hong kong university next year (Chinese University of Hong Kong or Lingnan University). I know I should be learning cantonese but I'm more worried about being able to read chinese (as I've been repeatedly told they teach in english). Still I'm worried that I'll struggle over there. Basically I'm asking if anyone knows if I should be stressing over this and if I have any hope of becoming semi-literate before september. thanks.

Practice Words  by isakerem   1. Oct 2008   German

In Practice Words, when I delay the words for 3 or 7 days, a blank page appears with the word "error" on the upper right.

There is no problem when I delay them for 1 or 14 days. What can be the problem?

Colour of the words  by alexandria2003   5. Sept 2008   German

It would be better (for me at least - I don't know what others think about it) if the words were always of the same colour (black for example). Quite tiring for the eyes.

Anyway thank you for this great site.

Flashcards & Michel Thomas course a good combination  by Bard7   7. Jul 2008   German

I have just got Michel Thomas's course. It is a CD course and I have done the first 2 Cd's. (2 of 10). I was very very sceptical of the claims on the box. Claims like he says that you can do the CD course without memorising, writing anything down or homework. However, after just the first 2 CD's, my German has come on tremendously. I can now put together some quite long sentences without much trouble

I saw something on Youtube about Woody Allen who learned French in a weekend from Thomas in the 1970's. Actually I am not surprised by this, though I have to take into account that Woody probably is more gifted than most in the academic department.

I hope the webmaster does not mind me mentioning another teaching method. I have found this Flashcard site very very helpful. I see it as complementing the Thomas course. The Thomas course does not concentrate of vocabulary or phrases in the way that this site does.

wonderful  by isakerem   6. Sept 2008   German

I believe that nativist account of how language is acquired is best as proposed by Chomsky and Kraschen. This page is wonderful because it promotes exposure to language (and not production in early stages)and I regard this page as the proof to my theory because I am myself amazed by how fast I learn german. That is first. Secondly, the option to choose words or sentences as to your english level is also in line with input hypothesis of Krashen. Thirdly, it is very enjoyable and this is also in line with nativism in that the input should be comprehensible, ample and pleasurable as to this theory.

I tried to say how I feel to see this web page.
Thanks, for all your effort.

Simplest characters first?  by kslnet   25. Jul 2008   Chinese

First, let me echo my compliments on the structure and features of this site! Very nice!

I registered as "Complete Newbie" but I understand that's only for your statistics. One thing I would really like is a way to learn simple characters first. I know they are presented by frequency but I find some words somewhat overwhelming, especially those that consist of 2-3 characters with a zillion strokes each (I'm Taiwanese so I want to learn traditional characters). When I learned Chinese as a kid, I remember learning the most basic words first (I, you, girl, boy, dog) etc. In my first loop as a new user, for example, I have the word "actual" which is quite complicated.

I realize it would be a lot of work to reorder all the words but I wonder if there's a way to combine frequency and stroke count so that those very new to Chinese can learn the most basic vocabulary first. Otherwise, I'll just make my own word list.

Suggestion for an archive list  by maverick   16. Jul 2008   German

I have a Suggestion for a feature. You can make a feature which would enable the users to copy all the words on their main list to a new list (that they create) so that if the main list gets crowded for example if it has more than 1000 words it would be hard to manage when trying to add new words and practicing them and it would be needed in that case to move all the old words to an archive list.

Or simply if you're like me just create a new account with a new main list. :p

I know it's not an important or top priority feature but just though sharing it anyway, after all it might be of any help.

Is vocabulary the key?  by Bard7   31. May 2008   German

I am now learning German afetr always being terrible at languages at school, but I am encouraged by the example of Sir Paul Nurse the Nobel Prize winning scientist who failed French O Level six times. He ended up working in a field of science dominated by the French and picked up French very quickly when he started to study all the French scientiffic journals. He now regularily addresses conferences in France - in French!

I have attended an evening class in German for the last six months, but I am now only making progress in communication and understanding German, once I made a real effort to learn vocabulary. I am now up to about 400 words.

I think that the problem with most language courses, at least for language dunces like me, is that they are nearly always prepared by people who are good at languages and do not address the way people actually learn how to communicate with each other.

Character search  by mediamarv   3. Jun 2008   Chinese

Is there a search function that I have not found yet, which will allow me to search for a particular character?
For example, I want to find the characters for Tai Pei so that I can show people who are mispronouncing Pei (they pronounce it with a P) that it is actually Bei, North, just like Beijing.
I get really annoyed when I hear news reporters mispronouncing it.
It's a carryover from Wade-Giles romanization. In Yale romanization it's very clear how it should be pronounced.

Word List Suggestion  by normZurawski   25. Apr 2008   Chinese

Numbers, from 0-100. I find sprinkling numbers randomly in my normal word lists helps me "get" them better. For some reason numbers give me a lot of trouble. Also, if you could add the numbers missing, most of the 80s and 90s. OK so 2 suggestions, a numbers word list and all the numbers :)

Thanks!

Third Tones Rising Too Much  by normZurawski   15. Apr 2008   Chinese

As I was doing these words in the living room last night my wife (Taiwanese) noticed that the third tone is rising too much. Listen to the sounds for learn (xue2) and snow (xue3) to get a good example of what I mean - there's virtually no difference. Also, the word for blood is not pronounced correctly, as it's supposed to be xie3 but sounds like xue2.

Find a University...  by soccerfinatic142   30. Jan 2008   Chinese

I am going to go to college or university in Taiwan. There is only one problem...I don't know where i can go! I have heard that there are colleges in Taiwan that teach courses in English...Which ones are they??? I want to do my entire college career in Taiwan...Where should I go??? Where should I look??? Does anybody know where I can go? I was an exchange student to Taiwan for a year so I'll be able to get by on my own. I have decent Chinese but not good enough to pass a class in Chinese. But then again...with some practice...I could probably pull it off...I just need to know where I can go. Where can I go!? Help me!!! Any information you have will be appreciated. Even if it's just a website. I want to go somewhere in Taibei or near it.
