What is the difference between the following two sentences: Вчера я шел в магазин и купил книгу and
Вчера я пошел в магазин и купил книгу | Nvd0_0 10. Sept 2017
шел = was going (on foot)/ was walking
"Когда я шёл в кино, я встретил своего друга.
When I was going to the cinema, I bumped into my friend."
"Я шел, потом заметил что-то блестящее под машиной Стэнли.

So, You cannot say Вчера я шел в магазин и купил книгy. Right? Unless, possibly, I bought the book before I arrived at the store. Right? Meaning, по пути в магазин.Right? If so, I should say "on the way." to avoid confusion. Right? | EricMerrick 31. Dec 2017
There is nothing wrong with both sentences. The first one means that you have bought a book on your way to the store. However, it does not imply that this book was bought in the aforementioned store. It could happen somewhere else on your way there. The second variant has rather a "present perfect" style. I would translate it into English as: I have bought the book yesterday in the store. Whoever you are talking to should understand it out of context: which book and in which store. I guess in this case is more important what you have done and not how. If I say: "Я иду в магазин", I can mean that I go there with the bus, but not necessarily on foot. Anyway, it is always difficult to interpret properly just one sentence without knowing a whole story. |
