Russian question  by AlZebra  Superman Site Supporter   12. Aug 2016

Привет всем!

У меня есть один вопрос. Я не понимаю почему "he" в следующем предложении переводится как "им" а не "ему".

The judge said he was driven by greed.

Судья заявил, что им управляла алчность.

Спасибо,
АлЗебра :)

eto dva predlogeniya v odnom. Soglasno rysskim pravilam, posle "said" dolgna stoyat zapyataya. Osnovnoe predlogenie The judge (podlegash4ee) said (skazyemoe) i dopolnitelnoe predlogenie: he (podlegasch4ee) was driven ( skazyemoe). Est pryamaya i nepryamaya re4. I was driven by greed - mnoi ypravlyala al4nost. (v tot moment) Primer: I have to admit i was driven by greed. (ya govory sei4as o moix motivax v proshlom)

he was driven by greed - eto passiv. 4to? - Greed (al4nost); delala 4to? - ypravlyala; ypravlyala kem? - im (sydjei). The judge (he) v dannom sly4ae ne podlegash4ee, a dopolnenie

Оказалось, что "Управлять" takes the instrumental case. Вот и всё.
Greed drove him.
Алчность управляла ИМ.

That's what I didn't get. Doh. Should have looked up the verb. Not sure how direct and indirect speech changes anything here, but if you can tell me in English, that would be great. I'm well aware of Russian punctuation rules. :-) Thanks though!

1.A sentence (a clause) includes at least a subject and a predicate . It expresses a complete thought. A structure with the subordinator that + clause completes the meaning expressed by the subject and predicate.
2. The subordinator THAT is often omitted after commonly used verbs, such as say, tell or think, especially when used in informal contexts.
3.Imperative Clauses: restate a command within a clause (reported or indirect speech).
Jack told me he (Jack) was working. - this is a reported statement. A quoted statement looks like: Jack said: "I was working." So, "he was driven by greed" is an imperative clause in this case.
4.In formal writing, the tense of the subordinated clause is 'backshifted' to the time frame of the verb in the main clause.(as viewed from past) SAME-TIME PAST: He said that he saw a rainbow. The same for the quoted statement: The judge said: "I was driven by greed."

Оба перевода возможны.
1...им управляла алчность
2...он управлялся алчностью.
Заметим, что оба варианта имеют оттенок страдательного залога.
