I notice in thai flashcards the use of Chan for the engish word I. However its been my experience that this is used by females only and men use Pom or Krapom , Now I am confiused can someone clarify the correct useage? thanks | adamwoodhams 22. Dec 2010
That's my experience, but if you listen to Thai's talk - unless they don't know each others names they will never say phom, or chan. Their nicknames replace these words - assuming that thay are conversing informally.

I am an English Teacher at a University in Roi-Et. I often hear students, both men and women, use the word 'Chan' when describing something they have done, or will do (perhaps when doing a speaking assignment) in formal language. my Thai friends told me that a Thai male may use pom or chan when speaking with friends, but other wise pom is correct, chan or di-chan is correct for females, non Thai males should always use pom. Thai females between friends often use thier nik name for I or me,ie Ning would like to go too the market, but a guy should not do this as he will just sound a bit odd. Crab-pom is realy modern slang and is used by males only as affirmative or thanks. |
