why use subjunctive in ...  by abbadagg   2. Mar 2011

In sentence "Me alegro tanto de que vinieras a visitarme" "vinieras" appears to be imperfect subjunctive; but in this sentence there is no doubt the action has taken place, why use subjunctive?

Thanks.

You would use the imperfect subjunctive because with Me alegro tanto is saying that I am very happy basicly so it's the emotion provoker + que + change of sub. But It's all in the past saying that i was very happy that you came to visit me. Also even though me alegro tanto is not a normal provoker when you use the imperfect subjunctive it does not always have to be in that set up because you can also you the conditional tense.
