How do you know when to pronounce the letter "o" as "o" or "a" ?
Sometimes I see a bar under the "o" to help know which way to pronounce, but more often than not, there isn't a bar (and by the way, is the bar commonly used in Russian or is it only used to help foreign Russian learners ?) | malinkibear 17. Aug 2011
I don't know what you mean by a bar under the letter, I've never seen that, even in learners' texts.
You just have to learn each word individually - if you read a word that you've not encountered before, there's no way of knowing. When о is stressed, it sounds like о, when unstressed it sounds like the unstressed а. If you listen to a lot of Russian, you'll soon learn when something just sounds off. |
