Pinyin & Zhuyin by quartertone 12. Aug 2006
I get confused sometimes with the spellings of pinyin. Would it be possible to add an option to show the zhuyin pronunciation instead? Then it would become more of a "realistic" learning experience! :] |

anybody else interested in that? |

No, well, I prefer the pinyin it's more practic and useful... |

Once you learn pinyin, its effecient. |

I disagree on the point of efficiency. I think what you might perceive as efficient is merely a matter of convinience, since you/we/westernized-folk are more familiar and comfortable with the Roman alphabet. Using your same argument, I could say that it would be easier to learn to speak Arabic or Hindi using our alphabet, but there are certain sounds that cannot be properly represented with a-z. On the other hand, pinyin is a standard now, and I'm not advocating a complete switch-over. I learned the zhuyin characters when I was very little, so I know how they sound. Now I get confused when I try to pronounce pinyin. There's certainly a learning process to either one. It's just a matter of learning a new character set, or memorizing which combination of (alphabet) letters go with what sound. I prefer the former, since the memorization process is made difficult (blocked, a psycholinguist would say) by prior knowledge of what those letters sound like in other (eg- English) contexts. |

But then again you could just listen to the sound and ignore the pinyin |

Well, that's not how i prefer to learn - seeing the words/pronounciation strengthens my understanding of how it's supposed to be pronounced.
But whatever. I seem to be outvoted one against everyone else, so it seems pointless to argue infavor of this.. |

Actually the person who records most of the words prefers zhuyin. I would be happy to offer zhuyin but the work involved in this is quite big, but I'll think about it. |

At first I didn't like pinyin, because it isn't pronounced as we would pronounced it in english. But once you get used to it you can get the correct pronounciation with just the pinyin writing.
I like pinyin because most dictionaries are in it. |

I any case I'm adding the Zhuyin little by little. |

Cool, I guess having both can't be bad :-). |

1st all all: fantastic website, great work! Many thanks for that!
Somehow I was relectant to learn Zhuyin but once I started, I find it much easier to learn than Pinyin and also closer to the real pronunciation...Unfortunately it is not much used, except in my new course! This is why I would really enjoy having it in addition to Pinyin (also when printing characters). |
