online talking Portuguese dictionaries?  by lsloan0000   1. Apr 2010

It seems that many of the English dictionaries available online have a feature to speak the word shown. Some use recordings and some use speech synthesis (computer voice).

However, it's difficult to find any Portuguese dictionaries online that talk. I haven't found one yet. Besides the definitions available on portuguese-flashcards.com, can anybody direct me to an online talking Portuguese dictionary? I would like to compare them. I love this web site, but I think the online dictionaries will have more extensive definitions and include etymologies as well as more words.

Thank you!

I am also looking for a Potuguese (Bazilian) dictionary that will pronounce words. I will let you know if I come across it. The closest thing so far is one called Michaelis. I think the book comes with a CD that has pronouciations but I'm not sure if they have both Portuguese and English spoken words http://michaelis.uol.com.br/
It's published in Brazil and very good but I think you must register for "UOL" membership for some of the better features if you will use it online.

As a side not I think these types of dictionaries don't exist for the Portuguese language because of the diarectics used in thewriten language (these symbols help you to know how to pronounciate the word). Until someone ecodes these diaretics to work with speech synthesis software we gringoes are S.O.L. only to rely on individual voice tracks like the ones found on this site.
