Verb stem/suffix question by Hellraiser 3. Apr 2010
I tried searching the forum, but found nothing. I'm new to Korean, and there's something that I don't understand.
Example, "지 않습니다" is added after the verb stem to form a negative sentence. So, if I understand correctly, I can take the word "to study/learn - 배웁니다", kick out the suffix and make a negative word, "not to study", which I have no idea how to make (also, where does the stem end and the suffix start?).
Or, alternatively, do I negate that by adding both words, like so: "배우 가지 않습니다", which, again, makes no sense at all.
Like I said, I really can't figure it out. The reason that half of the word "배웁니다" is missing in the second example is because I don't know if I have to kick the suffix out and if so, where the verb stem ends and where the suffix starts.
Can someone please help me out? | queenicedsc410 4. Apr 2010
sure. Yea the verb to learn= 배우다 <--
So you would subtract JUST the 다 and add on 지 않습니다
배우지 않습니다. I am not learning. 한국어를 배우지 않습니다. I am not learning Korean.
배웁니다 <--this is in the most Formal speech there is in Korean. However, the original verb is 배우다. Every verb had 다 at the end of it to make it into "dictionary form." When you subract 다 from it, you have the verb stem. Most conjugations are made with the verb stem.
For example: 공부하다<--to study
공부하 +지 않습니다.
To eat--> 먹다
먹지 않습니다
like this.
There's also another way to make a negative sentence. That's by placing "안" EXACTLY infront of the verb
배우다.
한국어 안 배웁니다 I'm not learning Korean.
Same exact thing.
(Bread) 빵 안 먹습니다 I'm not eating bread.
Hope this helps ya~ | Hellraiser 4. Apr 2010

I don't intend on opening a new thread every time I have a question, so I'll just ask here again :)
The reason I'm asking so much is because I'm studying Korean and Japanese in a university, but haven't been able to attend classes until recently due to medical reasons. So, any help is really appreciated :)
I just need someone to tell me if I'm doing some exercises properly, since there is not written solutions for my book. It's really simple, a picture of a room and 4 questions to where certain items are (picture of the exercise in question is here: http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/2418/ex01r.jpg). I'm just wondering if I answered correctly (if my answers would be acceptable):
1) 책상 영에는 침대가 잇ㅅ어요.
2) 책상 영는 냉장고가 잇ㅅ어요.
3) 칭믄 아래 책상이 잇ㅅ어요.
4) 책상 아래 가방이 잇ㅅ어요.
I realize that the "잇ㅅ어요" part is spelled wrong, but I just can't seem to get "ㅆ" in that word =/
Anyway, any help would be very appreciated :) | Forum Index |
