Grammar Lesson 22:

Adverbs

To describe an action or a state, one uses adverbs. In Swedish you normally add a suffix to the end of the adjective, which is often a simple -t.

Hon gick snabbt till busstationen. (She walked quickly to the bus station.)

Other examples using this rule:

lång - långt (long/far)

fin - fint (fine/good-looking/neat)

vacker - vackert (beautiful)

långsam - långsamt (slow)

snäll - snällt (kind)

More words where you can use this suffix: tacksam (grateful), grön (green), brun (brown), stadig (steady), bekväm (comfortable), fördelaktig (advantageous), mysig (cozy), gul (yellow), frisk (healthy), rolig (fun), stark (strong), ful (ugly), mjuk (soft), rik (rich), händig (practical, skilled, handy), blåsig (windy), trång (tight), ivrig (eager), böjlig (flexible, bendable), kreativ (creative), fantastisk (amazing, fantastic), stark (strong).

Sometimes spelling makes it difficult to apply this rule, and then you need to remember some irregular adverbs instead:

röd - rött (red)

hård - hårt (hard)

spänd - spänt (tense, regarding emotions)

högljudd - högljutt (loud, noisy)

utåtvänd - utåtvänt (extrovert)

noggrann - noggrant (meticulous)

god - gott (tasty, good)

There are also other forms of adverbs, describing moments in time, for example:

nu (now)

sedan (then)

ofta (often)

senare (later)

nyss (recently)

äntligen (finally)

sällan (rarely)

ibland (sometimes)

You can also use adverbs to describe the amount/degree of something. Some examples:

Enormt (Huge)

Rikligt (Immense, overflowing)

Mycket (Much, a lot)

Lite (Little, a little)

Some other adverbs you may wish to use at times:

fort (fast, quick)

illa (bad)

väl (well)

någorlunda (somewhat)

annorlunda (different)

visserligen (certainly, "that may be so")
