Raising Bilingual Kids
"Você pretende criar sua filha falando dois idiomas?"
"Do you intend to raise your daughter speaking two languages?"
"Sim, ela precisa aprender português e inglês, porque os avós de cada lado só falam uma língua".
"Yes, she needs to learn Portuguese and English, because the grandparents on both sides speak only one language."
"Mas como você pretende fazer isso?"
"But how do you plan to do that?"
"Bom, inicialmente pensei que poderíamos falar uma língua em casa e deixar que ela aprenda a outra na escola, mas percebi que isso é uma má ideia".
"Well, initially I thought that we could speak one language at home and let her learn the other at school, but I realized that this is a bad idea."
"Por quê?"
"Why?"
"Primeiro, porque ela não vai poder se comunicar com os meus sogros até entrar na escola. Segundo, porque ela vai ter problemas de adaptação por não se comunicar com os colegas de escola."
"Firstly, because she won't be able to communicate with my in-laws until she goes to school. Secondly, because she will have problems adjusting if she can't communicate with her schoolmates".
"Isso é verdade! Tenho uma amiga brasileira que mora na Inglaterra e o marido dela é tcheco. Ela criou a filha falando em português e o marido em tcheco até ela entrar na escola".
"That is true! I have a Brazilian friend who lives in England and her husband is Czech. She raised her daughter speaking Portuguese and her husband Czech until she started school."
"E o que aconteceu?"
"And what happened?"
"A menina sofreu. As crianças na escola batiam nela, porque ela não conseguia se comunicar com elas".
"The little girl struggled. The kids at school used to beat her up, because she could not communicate with them."
"Nossa! Que horrível!"
"Oh dear! How awful!"
"Sim, ela teve que mudar a filha de escola e pagar um professor particular de inglês".
"Yes, she had to change her daughter's school and pay for a private English teacher."
"Pelo menos a minha só terá que aprender duas línguas. Meu marido e eu decidimos cada um falar a sua língua nativa com ela".
"At least my daughter will only have to learn two languages. My husband and I decided each to speak our own native languages with her."
"Isso funcionou para a minha amiga, a filha dela hoje é fluente em português e tcheco e está aprendendo inglês. Boa sorte!"
"This worked for my friend; her daughter now speaks Portuguese and Czech fluently and is learning English. Good luck!"
