Grammar Lesson 46:

Il grado degli aggettivi (degree of comparison)

A qualifying adjective in its simple form is said to be in the positive degree.

Example:

alto (and all its forms) / tall

But the quality expressed by a qualifying adjective can change in intensity when there is a term of comparison.

The qualifying adjective can therefore be in the comparative degree, when used to compare two nouns / pronouns:

Example:

alto —> più alto, meno alto, alto quanto …
(tall —> taller, less tall, as tall as …)

And in the superlative degree, when used to compare more than two nouns / pronouns.

Example:

alto —> il più alto, altissimo, molto alto
(tall —> the tallest, very tall)
