Grammar Lesson 12:

How to use Altrui

Altrui is a possessive adjective used to indicate an indefinite possessor.

Altrui is normally translated as someone else’s orother people’s.

It is invariable (doesn’t agree with the noun it modifies).

Examples:

- Non mi piace andare in casa altrui / I don’t like to go in someone else’s place
- Marco non rispetta le opinioni altrui / Marco doesn’t respect the opinion of others

Altrui can also be used as a personal pronoun (always invariable). This usage is rare nowadays but can be found in old literary texts.

Example:

- Anzi d’altrui le tenere cure suol porre in gioco; / Rather it mocks at other’s tender feelings;

(Giacomo Leopardi, Canti, XX)

When used as a masculine noun (rare), altrui indicates the things possessed by someone else and is preceded by the definite article.

Example:

- Non rubare l’altrui / Don’t steal someone else’s stuff
