Italian demonstrative adjectives: stesso

Stesso is a demonstrative adjective used to express identity or perfect similarity.

  Singular Plural Meaning
Masculine
stesso stessi same
Feminine
stessa stesse

Examples:
 
Anna racconta sempre le stesse storie / Anna always tells the same stories
Marco ha gli occhi dello stesso colore di quelli di Anna / Marco's eyes are the same colour of Anna's
 
Stesso can also be used as a demonstrative pronoun.
 
Examples:
 
Sei sempre lo stesso / You're always the same
"Vorrei una birra, grazie" "Prendo lo stesso, grazie" / "A beer for me, thanks" "I'll have the same, thanks"
 
Stesso is used sometimes as an intensifier and translates as "I myself / You yourself, etc."
 
Examples:
 
Io stesso sono andato a prenderlo alla stazione / I myself went to meet him at the station
Guarda tu stesso! / See for yourself!
Lo stesso direttore d'orchestra si mise al pianoforte / The conductor himself sat at the piano
 
When used as an adverbial phrase lo stesso indicates indifference and translates in English as "anyway", "anyhow", "in any case", "whatever".
 
Examples:
 
Fa lo stesso, è lo stesso / Whatever
Anche se non hai fame devi mangiare lo stesso / You may not be hungry, but you have to eat anyway
Nevica ma festeggeremo lo stesso in giardino / It snows but we're having a party in the garden anyway
