Grammar Lesson 21:

The Plural of Nouns: Nouns Ending in -e

Singular masculine and feminine nouns ending in -e are generally pluralised by changing the ending to -i :

Examples:

(il) cuore (heart) / (i) cuori (hearts)
(la) madre (mother) / (le) madri (mothers)
(il) sudore (sweat) / (i) sudori (sweats)
la moglie (wife) / (le) mogli

Note that some singular feminine nouns ending in -ie in the plural form keep the same ending:

(la) specie (species) / (le) specie (species)
(la) barbarie (barbarity) / (le) barbarie (barbarities)
(la) serie (series) / (le) serie (series)
(la) progenie (progeny) / (le) progenie (descendants)

For example:

• A Marco piacciono le serie televisive americane / Marco likes American TV series
• Mi piace molto quella serie (televisiva) italiana / I really like that Italian TV series
