The funeral

Anna: "Hallo Willem, waar was je gisteren?"

Anna: Hi Willem, where were you yesterday?

Willem: I couldn't go to school because I had to go to my uncle's funeral.

Anna: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. How are you coping?
Willem: "Het gaat wel goed. Ik kende hem niet zo goed."

Willem: I'm doing okay I guess. I didn't know him that well.
Anna: "Echt? Dat is jammer."

Anna: Really? That's a pity.

Willem: Yes, but he hardly visited us, even though he lived close by.
Anna: "Oh, waarom niet?"

Anna: Oh why not?

Willem: Not sure. After he died my father expressed doubt that his late brother liked him much. I also think he was busy with his own friends, because there were a lot of people at the funeral!
Anna: "Ja, dat zal het geweest zijn."

Anna: Yes, that must have been it.
