The Great Fire of London

Betty:"Hallo Martin. Hoe was het op school?"

Beth: Hi Martin. How was school?
Martin:"Oh, het was geweldig. De geschiedenisles was erg interessant."

Martin: Oh, it was great. The history lesson was very interesting.
Betty:"Echt? Wat heb je geleerd?"

Beth: Really? What did you learn?
Martin:"We hebben gesproken over de Grote Brand van Londen. Het vernietigde viervijfde deel van Londen in 1666".

Martin: We learned about the "Great Fire of London". It destroyed four fifths of London in 1666.
Betty:"Dat is verschrikkelijk!"

Beth: That's horrible!
Martin:"Eigenlijk werden er meer mensen door gered dan dat er omkwamen."

Martin: It actually saved more people's lives than it killed.
Betty:"Hoe kan dat?"

Beth: How is that possible?
Martin:"De brand doodde een groot aantal ratten, die de pest overbrachten. Het aantal pestslachtoffers daalde erg snel na de brand".

Martin: The fire killed a lot of rats which helped to transmit the plague. Plague victims dropped rapidly after the fire.
Betty:"Dat is interessant. Je leert veel op school!"

Beth: That's interesting. You learn a lot in school!
Martin:"Ja, dat is waar!"

Martin: Yes, that's true!
