Grammar Lesson 8:

How to form the simple present

ik (I) --> Stem
jij (you) --> Stem + t
hij/zij/het (he/she/it) --> Stem + t
wij (we) --> Infinitive
jullie (you) --> Infinitive
zij (they) --> Infinitive

Two examples:

werken (to work) - Stem: werk
ik werk
jij werkt
hij/zij/het werkt
wij werken
jullie werken
zij werken

pakken (to take) - Stem: pak
ik pak
jij pakt
hij/zij/het pakt
wij pakken
jullie pakken
zij pakken

How to use the simple present:

1. To refer to a momentary action that coincides with the moment we are talking about it:

Het waait hard. (there is a strong wind)
De zon schijnt. (the sun shines)

2. To refer to an ongoing, habitual, or repetitive action or state:

Hij woont in Amsterdam. (He lives in Amsterdam.)
Ik ga altijd op de fiets naar mijn werk. (I always go by bicycle to my work.)
Hij eet iedere dag een appel. (He eats an apple a day.)

3. To refer to a future event (in combination with an adverb of time):

Zij gaat morgen naar Den Haag. (Tomorrow she's going to The Hague.)
Volgende week wordt het mooi weer. (Next week it will be fine weather.)

4. To refer to a hypothetical 'if - then' situation:

Als ik veel hamburgers eet, word ik dik. (If I eat many hamburgers, I'll get fat.)
Als je het raam sluit, tocht het niet meer. (If you close the window, there won't be a draught anymore.)
