Grammar Lesson 7:

Plurals for feminine nouns

The following rules apply to form the plural of feminine nouns:

If the noun ends in a "я" replace "я" with "и":

семья - семьи (family - families)
профессия - профессии (occupation - occupations)
баня - бани (steam bath - steam baths)
струя - струи (jet - jets)

If the noun ends in a "ь" replace "ь" with "и":

местность - местности (area - areas)
ночь - ночи (night - nights)
вещь - вещи (thing - things)

If the noun ends in a "а" replace "а" with "ы" (unless previous consonant is Г, К, Х, Ж, Ч, Ш, Щ then replace with "и"):

полоса - полосы (band - bands)
ресница - ресницы (eyelash - eyelashes)
веха - вехи (milestone - milestones)
